The Lorenzo Dow McCabe Manuscript Collection
Lorenzo Dow McCabe (1817–1897) was an influential American Methodist theologian, educator, and author. He served as a professor of theology and philosophy at Ohio Wesleyan University for several decades, shaping the theological education of numerous students. McCabe was known for his deep engagement with issues of divine providence, human free will, and the nature of God, contributing significantly to Methodist thought in the 19th century.
Among his notable works are The Foreknowledge of God and Cognate Themes and Divine Nescience of Future Contingencies a Necessity, where he explored the complexities of God's omniscience and human freedom. McCabe’s theological perspectives sparked considerable discussion within Methodist circles, as he challenged prevailing views on divine foreknowledge.
His legacy lies in his commitment to intellectual rigor within Christian theology and his efforts to reconcile faith with philosophical inquiry.
